We worship because God demands/desires worship Ex 20:1-7.

  1. God demands worship because He and He alone is worthy of it. He is the only Being that truly deserves worship. He requests that we acknowledge His greatness, His power, and His glory.
  2. We worship because the men of old did it, the early church did it-Abraham the father of faith worshiped God. Genesis 17:3: Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, and among the things that God said was that he Abraham was to change his name from Abram to Abraham. Sarah also got a new name from Sarai and God re-affirmed his commitment to make Abraham a father of multitudes Gen 12:1-3.
  3. It is a psychological need. Man desires to worship a supreme being or look up to some higher power or authority.
  4. This is what we shall do when we get to heaven-Rev 4:1-11.Everybody in heaven including the 24 elders and beast are all engaged in continuous worship.
  5. It pleases the Lord when we worship. John 4:23.’But the hour cometh and now is when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him’

What is worship?

Worship is “to give honour, homage, reverence, respect, adoration, praise, or glory to a superior being.” Worship cannot be separated from our lifestyle and so we can arguably say that worship is a life style or else it should be a life style . The following scriptures illustrate why we should worship and why it’s a lifestyle. Numbers 20:6: Moses and Aaron prayed to the Lord when the people/children of Israel grumbled before the Lord. God instructs Moses what to do with the staff in his hand and that he should speak to the stone and water was to be provided, however because they rebelled against the Lord by doing contrary to what God had asked him to do judgment was pronounced. Aaron as a result dies on top of Mount Hor and Moses witnesses the whole ordeal and gives his garment to his son Eleazar vv 28-29.

Lessons on worship

  • In worship total obedience is demanded
  • Leaders ought to be worshippers Moses and Aaron were. They exemplified a life of worship and God.
  • The people you lead will have issues from time to time, as you worship, God provides a way (instructions to get water were given)
  • Worship touches on generations. Eleazar is looped in as a result of his father being a worshiper. God will allow a worshiper to have an inheritance or leave a legacy Moses did. 1 Chronicles 29:20: The chapter preceding this i.e. 28 gives a record of how David desired to build the Lord a temple. He however gets to know from the Lord that He was not fit to do this simply because he was a man of war and had shed a lot of blood and that his son Solomon would take on this task as God desired. He gets the plan from the Lord and goes ahead to put together the list of the things/materials that were needed to build. Read chapter 28. Chapter 29 tells of how David and the entire children of Israel were able to put to together all that was needed and how all this project that seemingly had no direct attachment to spirituality has a very significant impact on the lives of the people and the generations to come.
